Woman living with albinism named Casual Day ambassador

"I can honestly look back and know that my past has made me a stronger and better person today."

A 20-year-old woman from Eersterust has been chosen one of this year’s Casual Day ambassadors and will be featured on 2022’s #ICelebrateSA poster.

Born and bred in Eersterust, Leandré Kibido, better known as “Lallie” suffers from a skin condition called albinism.

Casual Day, which will be celebrated on Friday, September 2 is all about persons with disabilities.

Growing up, Kibido suffered a lot of abuse as she was seen as “different”.

“I received a lot of hatred and experienced discrimination by different cultures where I’d be asked why don’t I look or speak a certain way.

“Due to that, I went through a difficult time accepting myself, but I can honestly look back today and know that my past has made me a stronger and better person today,” she said.

Kibido aims to make South Africa aware that albinism occurs in all cultures and genders.

“I want to urge my fellow South Africans to help spread the word and celebrate Casual Day. Help us support persons with disabilities by purchasing Casual Day stickers and merchandise,” she said.

Her message to people living with disabilities is never let your past dictate your future.

“Nothing good is delivered without a desire to accomplish your goal. Keep your chin up.

“Nothing in life will ever be easy, but walk with the intention of being a leader not a follower. Be unique. Stand out. Always spread love and kindness. You were born with a purpose.

“Let us portray confidence, kindness, but most importantly brilliance in diversity,” Kibido said.
