Senior karate instructors bring the sport to the community

The training sessions are open to all interested karate practitioners of all styles, irrespective of affiliation to a particular association.

The SA Karate Legends group is bringing karate to township youth in the north of Pretoria to revive the sport which has experienced a decline in recent years.

Their recent training session took place at Orchards park where a large number of community members gathered to practice the art of karate.

The group was established in 2021 to develop karate in black communities.

Two senior black instructors from two major karate organisations in the country collaborated to address the factors that have contributed to the decrease in interest in the sport.

These factors include a lack of financial resources, proper training facilities and qualified instructors.

According to the group’s founders, Shihan Steve Madue and Shihan Lucas Tau, the group’s vision is to rejuvenate karate in black communities; thereby giving children, youth and adults an opportunity to practice the sport as was the norm in the past.

SA Karate Legends conducts free training sessions or clinics once a month on Saturday or Sunday in the townships and villages on a rotational basis.

The training sessions are open to all interested karate practitioners of all styles, irrespective of affiliation to a particular association.

To date, the group has attracted practitioners of Shotokan, Shitoryu, Kyokushinkai, MouThai and Toromiyake karate styles.
