Gauteng education dept passes 600 000 online applications processed
Only 14 days remain before the end of the application period.
The Gauteng Department of Education’s (GDE) 2023 online admissions has processed 595 919 Grade 1 and 8 learner applications since it opened on July 22.
GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona said last Friday that the admissions system recorded 250 463 applications for Grade 1 and 345 456 for Grade 8.
“The system has proven to have functioned seamlessly with minimal challenges as a large number of parents and guardians have been able to apply without any major difficulties.”
Mabona said only 14 days remained before the application period closed.
“The 2023 application period will close on August 19, midnight.”
He said those who haven’t applied for their children must do so on www.gdeadmissions.gov.za.
“We urge all parents to upload the required documents on the system as they apply or submit certified copies thereof to the schools they applied to.
“Applicants who opt to upload on the system must not also submit these documents to the schools,” he said.
“Applicants who may not have internet access or the resources required to apply can visit their nearest district office or our walk-in centres for assistance.”
GDE MEC Panyaza Lesufi said they were very proud that their systems kept improving and processing a larger number of applications each year.
“The existence of this system has saved many parents a lot of time and resources.
“In the past, parents needed to travel and wait in long queues at schools to apply.
“Now, with the system, parents merely use their smartphones or computers wherever they are to apply for their children in under 20 minutes,” he said.
Anyone who requires assistance or has any application-related enquiries must contact the call centre on 0800 000 789 via WhatsApp on 060 891 0361.
