Tshwane metro claims back hijacked building in Gezina

"This is a great loss of revenue for the metro and, as such, legal action and criminal charges will be constituted against the landlord."

Tshwane metro‘s shared services department has undertaken a comprehensive drive to combat the recent upsurge in illegal occupation of metro-owned commercial buildings in Tshwane.

The drive was initiated after community members raised the alarm about the illegal occupation of a commercial city building in Gezina, Rietfontein, in the Moot.

Metro mayoral spokesperson Sipho Stuurman said in this specific case, a self-proclaimed landlord has been illegally collecting rent.

“This is a great loss of revenue for the metro and, as such, legal action and criminal charges will be constituted against the landlord,” said Stuurman.

Going forward, the metro will intensify efforts against any illegal occupants of metro-owed properties across Tshwane.

“Working with law enforcement authorities, we will ensure that we prevent metro-owned buildings from being hijacked, and go after those who are already illegally collecting revenue for personal gain.

“Moving against a highjacked building is crucial as this criminality prevents the metro from earning revenue that could be directed towards improving infrastructure and services to our residents,” he said.

Stuurman added that Tshwane’s multiparty coalition government does not tolerate fraud and corruption.

“We will take all the necessary steps to ensure that we claim back metro-owned assets,” he said.
