Mamabolo opens a new testing centre in Centurion

Gauteng roads and transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo opened a new temporary licencing centre at the Centurion Gautrain station on Thursday.

Mamabolo said that the department would continue to roll out its smart driving testing centres with new technologies aimed at turning the tide against maladministration, fraud, corruption, and poor service delivery.

“The new generation centres offer efficient service standards and serve as models for future ones,” he said.

“They also allow us to address various issues raised in the forensic investigation report into allegations of corruption at our testing centres.”

The forensic report uncovered fraudulent activities and corruption by officials and outside intermediaries whilst recommending corrective actions.

The report also recommended that all driving schools should be required to register with the Gauteng Department of Road and Transport.

“Concerning driving schools, we recommend that the department consider that driving schools be required to be registered with them,” the report read.

The report further said that driving schools be issued with registration certificates that should be renewed annually.

Another recommendation was that learners, who wished to use driving school vehicles for their testing, should make sure that the school provides the department with proof of registration.

“When an applicant wishes to use a driving school’s vehicle for their test, the driving school should be required to present proof that they are registered.”

A portal of registered driving schools accessible to the public, should be maintained too.

Among the recommendations was that employees whose assets did not match their salaries should be investigated by law enforcement authorities.

Immediately after releasing the report, Mamabolo made an oversight visit to the grass-cutting on Jean Avenue and along the N14.
