Moot crime hotspots to avoid – AfriForum crime report
The area in 24th Avenue and Nico Smit Street next to the railway bridge has become a crime hotspot for public urination, drug and public alcohol use, and prostitution - according to the report.
A recent report released by AfriForum has painted a worrying picture of crime trends in the Moot area.
According to the report, the area around 24th Avenue and Nico Smit Street next to the railway bridge has become a hotspot for public urination, drug and public alcohol use and prostitution.
The report showed that about 30 vagrants have settled on municipal land in the area.
Reports of crimes, as well as harassment, have increased.
There has also been an increase in cable theft in the area.
“Illegal shelters have been erected in the area as well, which could indicate a potential land grab,” stated Andries Opperman, a team member of the Groter-Moot, in the report.
Ward councillor Mari Joubert said she has received reports of workers using taxis being harassed in the mornings.
“Many workers have to use this road after they get dropped off by taxis and they have reported being harassed in the mornings and sometimes in the evenings as well, which is a big concern,” said Joubert.
Sergeant Sam Shibambo from the Eersterust police said the Eersterust cemetery is the only crime hotspot in the area and urged residents to be careful when walking there.
Joubert has suggested residents follow the following safety tips:
– Use sidewalks and off-road paths, rather than the street.
– Walk facing traffic so you can see and react to vehicles.
– Use extra caution when crossing streets.
– Avoid deserted routes.
– Beware of tripping hazards.
– Avoid walking alone. Try and stay with a group of two or three friends.
– Always keep cellphones and other valuables hidden and out of sight.
