AmaTuks top the NFD table after five matches
They have won three matches and drawn two after five opening National First Division matches.
The University of Pretoria started the new national first division (NFD) impressively after collecting 11 points out of a possible 15 in the last five matches.
They have won three games and drawn two matches to become one of two teams that haven’t tasted a defeat this season.
AmaTuks head coach Tlisane Motaung said good pre-season preparation helped them to start a season well despite having lost eight players from last season.
“The two months we had with our new players helped us a lot to try to make them understand how we play and I’m glad that they’re adapting well,” he said.
Despite having an impressive start to the season, Motaung said he is not happy with the team’s goal tally so far – six goals scored against two conceded.
“I’m not happy with the goal tally considering the number of chances we are missing but we are better off at least because we are not conceding a lot,” he said.
He added that he would like to see the team doing better than what they’ve done so far in terms of goals and defensive style.
AmaTuks came close to automatic promotion to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) but fell short in the last five matches of the season.
They also failed to gain promotion via the playoffs when Moroka Swallows stole the show to retain their spot in the PSL.
Motaung said the two harsh lessons have taught him that conceding goals and losing matches will not help in their pursuit of automatic promotion.
“I learned that the league is difficult and play-offs are not easy. You need to try to get yourself automatic promotion to the PSL. However, if we find ourselves in the playoffs, we still need to push,” he said.
