Sundowns Ladies break last season’s goalscoring record
With eight games still to play, Mamelodi Sundowns could reach a century of goals in the league after netting 88 goals to break last season’s tally of 87 goals.
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies surpassed their last season’s goal tally of 87 in a season when they scored two late goals to beat Vasco da Gama Ladies in the Hollywoodbets super league recently.
Goals from Boitumelo Rabale and Lelona Daweti handed the Brazilians maximum points at Parow Park in Cape Town as they edge closer to retaining their league title.
The league leaders and top scorers have now scored 88 goals this season with eight games to go before the season comes to an end.
Despite missing their top players due to the international break, coach Jerry Tshabalala managed to pick a winning side to face the team from Cape Town.
According to a statement on the Sundowns’ website, striker Lelona Daweti said the game was not easy but she was pleased with the hard-fought victory.
“Our opponents deployed a low block and foiled several of our attacking chances. They came hard at us, thus, we had to dig deep to secure maximum points,” she said.
She added that matches like these prepare them for the CAF women’s champions league.
“These are the kind of fixtures that we will be encountering during the champions league, and we must be ready to always find a way to win,” she said.
After ending a mini-goal drought, striker Boitumelo Rabale said her team showed class where it mattered most.
“Our opponents were very determined to get a result, but we were patient, and reaped the rewards late on. We are very proud of our performance today and we are prepared for the next game,” she said.
Sundowns have won 19 losing only twice in their 22 games this season and are seven points clear of second place TUT Ladies.
They have conceded only 11 goals for a goal difference of plus 77.
The league leaders face Vasco da Gama again in the league at the UWC stadium on Sunday October 9.
