The Mamelodi Amalgamated Taxi Association (Mata) celebrated national transport month by honouring patrollers, marshal teams and veterans of the association on Friday.

The award ceremony was in conjunction with the official opening of Mata offices in Silverton.

Mata chairperson Ben Maredi said the association comes from a long way of hardships, loss, and good and bad times.

“Honouring the members of the association, we wanted to show them that we really appreciate what they have done for the association and still doing at present,” said Maredi.

“Our doors are always open for everyone as we are working with the community every day by transporting from point A to B,” he said.

He said in celebrating transport month, Meta wanted to make their taxi drivers, including motorists, aware of safety on the roads.

Maredi pleaded with motorists to always respect the rules of the road at all times.

“Let us buckle up at all times and, most importantly, let us not drink and drive.”

Mata members including the route committee, route chairperson, monitoring team, veterans and executives were recognised by getting certificates of recognition, awards and a Mata cap, T-shirt and raincoat.

A member of the Mata monitoring team, Bulelani Mbanyana, thanked the association for recognising the work they do daily.

“We are dedicating this award to our late colleague Tommy Mashaba who passed on two months ago,” said Mbanyana.

Mata chairperson of the Nellmapius town route, Thomas Thubakgale, said he has been in the taxi industry for almost 25 years and that this was the first time he was ever recognised.

He believes what the office is doing will motivate everyone in the taxi industry to work hard with dedication.

Mashaba encouraged the association to continue working hard and keep up the good work.

Among the honoured members of Mata was veteran Agnes Motaung who said she has been in the taxi industry since 2003.

Guests attending the ceremony included legendary Ndebele singer Dr Thembi and FELLDTA chairperson Sello and ward councillor Collen Marishane and their business partners.
