Gauteng public hospitals welcome New Year’s babies
Health facilities across the province had delivered 167 babies by midday on January 1 2023.
By midday on New Year’s Day, hospitals and health facilities across Gauteng had delivered 167 New Year’s babies.
In Pretoria, Tembisa Hospital welcomed 20 babies while Kalafong Hospital saw the delivery of five babies.
The academic hospitals saw four babies, including a set of twins, born at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital while Steve Biko Academic Hospital saw the birth of three babies.
Seven babies were born at the Mamelodi Hospital while four babies were born at the Tshwane District Hospital.
During her visit to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hopsital, Gauteng health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko encouraged mothers to breastfeed exclusively, where possible, for the first six months.
“Breast milk contains all nutritional substances and antibodies babies need to grow and protect them from illness, Nkomo-Ralehoko said.
“Mothers must also ensure their little ones are immunised at regular ages in order to protect them against diseases such as polio, hepatitis, measles and meningitis.”
Nkomo-Ralehoko visited the mothers and handed out gifts to help celebrate the new arrivals.
