Springvale first day of school filled with excitement and tears
Our kids have not been placed despite applying on time, Fakude
The first day of school for Springvale primary learners was characterised by a lot of crying, uncertainty and heel-digging.
The majority of parents expressed excitement over the start of this year’s school term, but some were not as excited as they were still waiting for their kid’s placement to be confirmed.
Millicent Fakude, a mother who was with her daughter at the school, said she was happy that the school term has begun but was disappointed that her child has not been placed yet despite applying online on time.

The parent’s struggles for a spot for their kids comes a day after Gauteng education MEC Matome Chiloane’s assurance that all children will be placed in school.
“We are aware that some parents have not yet had their children placed in schools but we want to ensure that their children will be in school. We are working around the clock to ensure that those children are placed,” Chiloane said.

Nokuzola Jack, grandmother to Aphelele, was overly excited for her grandchildren’s first day at school.
“I am happy that my son’s daughters are starting school today, and they are equally happy to be here today as well. I personally packed their lunchboxes, I wanted their first day to be as easy and enjoyable as possible,” said Jack.

Teachers were also excited to meet their new bundles of joy, as they could be seen helping them to the classrooms, showing them the restrooms and introducing them to the school.
