Pretoria West SAPS and partners visit two schools
Learners were taught about the importance of putting themselves in others' shoes.
The Pretoria West SAPS, joined by the Department of Community Safety visited Fusion high school and Bagale primary school recently to talk to learners about school safety.
“We want to ensure that learners know that no crime such as being in possession of drugs/dagga, alcohol and dangerous weapons shall be tolerated on the school premises,” said police spokesperson Constable Sibongile Vuma.
The Pretoria West SAPS’s Social Crime and Prevention team led the effort and was accompanied by a representative of the Department of Community Safety.

Learners were given various tips on how to navigate high-school life successfully and safely. One tip was to be wary of the use of cellphones, which the authorities made clear were strictly prohibited on school grounds.
“Cellphones can be used for cyberbullying and cybercrimes. As we have seen in the news several times last year, learners would beat each other on certain trending videos or learners would lose their self-confidence and would then take their lives because of viral videos on social media. If it were not for those videos taken by learners, all this could have been prevented,” Vuma continued.
Learners were taught about the importance of putting themselves in others’ shoes in incidents such as these. They were encouraged to not laugh at or taunt a bullying victim but to report the matter to a staff member or the police.

Learners were also reminded that the police offer social work services should they have an issue at home or school that they wish to discuss.
During the Fusion high school assembly, learners elected during the school’s beauty pageant last year to be junior officials that help teachers with discipline and order were introduced to the school.
In closure, learners were told that the SAPS will be doing regular unannounced surprise visits with police dogs to monitor that no drugs were brought onto the school premises.
