Gauteng boosts Bronkhorstspruit underdeveloped community
MEC Mbali Hlophe encouraged the learners to consider a career in agriculture or waste management.
The Gauteng MEC for social, agriculture, rural and environmental development distributed uniforms and health packs to learners in Bronkhorstspruit on Monday.
Mbali Hlophe visited the area as part of the provincial government’s back-to-school campaign, said her spokesperson Nkosana Mtolo.
Hlophe distributed about 300 school uniforms and 25 dignity packs to vulnerable and orphaned children at Sokhulumi in Pretoria.
The uniform pack consisted of a pair of shoes, pair of socks, jersey, tunic/trouser/skirt, pack of underwear, vest, bag while the dignity pack contained soap, moisturiser and sanitary towels.
Mtolo said the uniforms were manufactured by a local cooperative for children who were largely from poor and vulnerable households with little income or dependent on state grants.
Hlophe encouraged learners at Mahlenga senior secondary school to consider agriculture and waste management as a careers to utilise the vast land available to their disposal in their communities.
“Your parents invest so much in you to acquire education so please aim to become better persons in the future.
“Don’t let your current situation determine your future. If you think of your career path, look at your options and consider a future in agriculture because your community is rich in land,” he said.
“A basic commodity is food because it is required daily.
“Waste management is also a venture to look into to make a living as this affects spaces we reside in.”
Amapiano singer and motivational speaker Lady Du encouraged the learners to be the ones who break their family poverty cycle by working hard, “so that you can acquire wealth”.
Grade 12 learner Phumlani Kabini (16) said it was momentous to have the MEC open their world to possible careers, given the underdeveloped community they live in.
“We are grateful to the department and MEC Hlophe for this special visit and for opening our eyes to a number of career opportunities.”
