Umalusi gives green-light to release matric results

Minister Motshekga will announce the results on Thursday.

The Department of Basic Education is one step closer to releasing the 2022 matric results after quality assurance body Umalusi gave the green light.

Umalusi gave its approval for the results to be published after initially requesting an extension to investigate allegations of cheating.

Chairperson Yunus Ballim said during a media briefing that body greenlit the Department of Basic Education and the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) exam results for publication.

Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga will announce the results on Thursday.

Ballim added that learners can collect their results early in the morning of January 20.

The department stated that learners will have until February 3 to request a remark or recheck of their exam papers. If they wish to retake the exams or improve their results, the next opportunity will be in May/June.

Last week Motshekga debunked the myth that one needed to score a 30% mark to pass saying 40% needed to be attained in at least three subjects.

Meanwhile, Curro announced that it achieved a 98.63% pass rate for 2022.

Spokesperson Nosi Mlotshwa said the achievement was despite the school’s 1 893 learners, who wrote the IEB exams last year missing out on most of their Grade 10 curriculum during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic.

“This grade is fundamental for learners because it determines how one does in their final year of schooling.”

Independent Institute of Education general manager Peter Kriel said mid-year exams play a significant role and should be taken as seriously as final exams.

“If the foundations you lay at the start of your senior high years are not solid, or you neglect to ensure your walls are solidly built in subsequent years, you can attempt to put on the most beautiful roof in your matric year, but it just won’t work.”

Public school matriculants can get their results directly from their respective schools from 12:00 or by logging on to the department website.
