The Festival de la Francophonie 2023, saw over 5000 people from all over Pretoria enjoying the incredible sights, sounds, food, and colours, of around 18 different Francophone Embassies and International Organisations.

The event was held at Hoërskool Waterkloof on Saturday from 11:00 to 17:00.

Hugo de Groot from the school said the event was a success and international organisations had the opportunity to present the best of what their countries have to show.

He said Festival de la Francophonie presented wonderful concerts, exhibition spaces, and food stalls, which everyone enjoyed for free.

“The Alliance Française Pretoria is always proud to form part of this amazing event. Having taken part, and helped organise it, for the better part of 15 years,” said De Groot.

“Each year it gets bigger, more popular, and more vibrant, bringing with it many changes in the format,” he said.

“Having started at the Alliance Française Pretoria, on 99 Rivier Street Sunnyside, it grew to a point where our humble venue became far too small to accommodate the ever increasing number of guests and participants, and is the driving reason why we moved this event into schools around Pretoria.”

He said the event has over the years seen the likes of Johnny Clegg even opening it in French. Maps Maponyane, Flip van der Merwe, and a variety of other celebrities have graced the event.

The Festival de la Francophonie is a wonderful show of cultural exchange that is utterly unbeatable, and is an event that encapsulates the richness and diversity of the Capital City, which plays host to a number of embassies.

“It brings to the fore the many different cultures that make up the essence of the French language, and the true reason why we celebrate it,” De Groot added.
