Yet another shopping centre shooting in Centurion

The suspects tried to flee in the getaway vehicle but crashed into another car.

Two suspects were arrested during an armed robbery at a takeaway restaurant at a shopping centre in Centurion this week – the third such incident in the area this month.

The suspects were arrested while trying to flee while a third one managed to escape at around 18:30 on April 5.

“Driving a white VW Polo TSI at the Jean Village shopping centre, they thought that they had identified a meek and mild-mannered victim,” said Lyttelton police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.

“However, they could not have been more wrong.”

Miller said that the victim was waiting for a food order outside the takeaway when the “brazen, violent and aggressive” suspects sprang into action and grabbed the victim’s cell phone.

The victim, fearing for his life and those around him, defended himself by using his licensed firearm.

The suspects tried to flee in the get-away vehicle, but crashed into a community member’s car.

The suspects then abandoned the vehicle and tried to flee on foot.

“One of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound and was treated on the scene by paramedics. The second suspect was apprehended by a group of community members who saw what had happened,” said Miller.

Charges related to armed robbery and possession of stolen property were opened.

“Lyttelton SAPS detectives will be opposing bail, and will also be linking these suspects to other similar cases from around the area,” said Miller.

Emergency services Cert-SA confirmed that one of the alleged robbers was seriously injured after sustaining a gunshot wound.

“We found two alleged robbers lying on the floor. One of them sustained a gunshot wound while the other one sustained minor injuries while trying to allegedly flee the scene”.

The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital in a stable but serious condition, under police guard.

Centurion has been plagued by such robberies this month.

On April 1, staff at a fast-food restaurant were held at gunpoint just before closing time. No one was injured in this incident and cash and cell phones were stolen.

On April 4, a man was left fighting for his life after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds at another shopping centre. Four robbers escaped after stealing an undisclosed amount of cash.
