Metro warns against scammers, bank details remain the same

The warning comes after the Tshwane metro found out that various scammers were contacting ratepayers falsely claiming the metro's bank details had changed.

The Tshwane metro has urged residents to be on the lookout for scams involving its bank details which have not changed.

The warning comes after the metro noticed letters and calls that scammers were making to residents falsely claiming the metro’s bank details had changed.

According to metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, any money paid into fraudulent bank accounts as per those sent by fraudsters would be lost.

Mashigo confirmed the metro’s bank details had not changed.

“This is a scam and ratepayers should not use this account to make payments to the city as the money will be lost.”

He said the city does not give out its bank details directly to ratepayers.

“Ratepayers can make payments through the City of Tshwane customer care walk-in centre cashiers through e-Tshwane or at any post office, Pick n Pay, Usave, OK, Spar, Boxer, Caltex, BP, EP Kiosks, Investec, MTN, FNB, ABSA, Nedbank, Standard Bank, Shoprite or Checkers.”

Mashigo said payments can also be made through electronic fund transfer (EFT).

“When paying through e-Tshwane you will receive immediate confirmation of payment and your account will be updated,” he said.

Mashigo encouraged residents to report any fraud and corruption directly to the Tshwane metro, via the hotline at 080 874 9263.
