Private security firm says criminals target local businesses because there’s cash, lack of security on premises
"Keeping large amounts of cash on the premises is a definite risk for everyone working at the business."
Local businesses are being urged to be vigilant, especially just after opening and just before closing their premises.
The warning comes from private security company ADT Fidelity, which recently warned businesses of certain practices that could put them at risk of theft.
Another of these, according to ADT Fidelity spokesperson Charnel Hattingh, was keeping large amounts of cash on the business premises.
“Keeping large amounts of cash on the premises is a definite risk for everyone working at the business,” Hattingh said.
Earlier this month, a man was left fighting for his life when he was shot multiple times in a robbery at a popular shopping centre in Centurion.
Four men are on the run following the robbery at the mall in Brakfontein Road, Louwlardia, that happened on 5 April.
Hattingh said all business owners had a legal duty to provide and maintain a safe working environment for workers and have the correct physical security systems in place.
“Local business owners are advised to examine their security measures, starting from the outer boundary and progressing inward,” she said.
Hattingh outlined the following security layers for business owners to ensure the safety of their premises:
– Small businesses should have walling, palisade fencing, or gates, all of which are deterrents to criminals. These can be even further protected with systems like electric fencing, security beams, and security guards, which monitor vehicles and people coming in and out.
– The parking area for workers and customers should have CCTV and security guards to patrol the area.
– Front entrances should be protected with security gates that work on an intercom system and staff should be equipped with panic buttons linked to armed response.
– Workers need mobile and fixed panic buttons inside the workplace to access emergency telephone numbers and a clear emergency plan to follow in the event of any scenario such as fire, a hostage situation, violent attack, medical emergency, or robbery.
-The business must have a proper security solution in place for opening and closing times.
“Many incidents at business premises can be avoided or have a different outcome with improved security systems in place and staff having more security knowledge,” Hattingh said.
