Two shot dead as police foil CIT robbery in Centurion
“The men were spotted at a local shopping centre driving a stolen black BMW and waiting for a G4S cash van,” says police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
Police in Centurion fatally shot two gun-wielding men in another attempted cash in transit heist during the Easter weekend.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe police foiled the cash-in-transit heist on Saturday afternoon along John Vorster Drive in Centurion.
The multidisciplinary team was following up on intelligence-driven information when they intercepted a group of armed suspects.
Mathe said two robbers were fatally wounded during a shoot-out with the police, and three AK-47 automatic rifles were recovered.
“The men were spotted at a local shopping centre driving a stolen black BMW and waiting for a G4S cash van,” she said.
“The men sped off when they realised that the police were on their trail, which resulted in a chase on Olievenhoutbosch Road until John Vorster Drive.”
The police are on the hunt for two men who escaped.
She said the police noted that criminals took advantage of the holiday season.
“Criminals seek to prey on people while they are relaxed, while the communities enjoy themselves. They [residents] should be aware of their surroundings and take steps to secure their loved ones and property,” she said.
Police commissioner General Fannie Masemola urged people to conduct themselves in an orderly manner.
“We continue to urge our communities to continue exercising discipline and restraint. We call upon people to continue abiding by the rules of the road,” he said.
