SADAG offers free mental-health support groups in Centurion

The free support group is located at the NG Kerk Wierda Park, 279 Piet Hugo Street, Eldoraigne, Centurion, and meets every Tuesday at 18:30.

SADAG is inviting Tshwane residents to take part in their weekly support group meetings for persons living with mental-health-related issues.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) says the group sessions are for open-minded people that wish to connect with others living with depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder.

Support group leader Clarissa says, “I believe we are all just people united by the common experience of living with a mental illness. In my group, no one ‘suffers’ from a mental illness, rather we ‘live with it’. It is not something we are, rather it is something we have”.

The free support group is located at the NG Kerk Wierda Park, 279 Piet Hugo Street, Eldoraigne, Centurion, and meets every Tuesday at 18:30.

The support groups are said to provide a safe and understanding environment where members can share their life experiences dealing with mental illness and receive information that they can use to combat its various symptoms.

“Living with a mental illness can feel lonely and isolating, at times you may find yourself thinking that no one really understands what you are going through. But this doesn’t have to be the case,” said Jane Mashava of SADAG.

“It is important to remember that you are not alone and that there are people out there who really do understand. Joining a support group is a powerful commitment to looking after your mental health,” Mashava continued.

Residents that are interested in Centurion or its surrounding areas and that live with depression, anxiety and/or bipolar disorder, are urged to reach out to Clarrisa on 076 812 9219 for more information or to RSVP. Residents are also urged to share with friends and family to help those in need.

“Ultimately it is just another adjective that describes an aspect of us, just being tall or short. Living with a mental illness doesn’t define who you are. Anyone looking to support as well as be supported by others is welcome to join our group. It is a safe space, a community,” Clarissa concluded.
