An unknown group of assailants vandalised the Wolmer Substation in Onderstepoort in the north of Pretoria in the early hours of Monday, May 20, leaving north residents in the dark for hours.
According to Ward 2 councillor Quentin Meyer, the substation was vandalised at around midnight.
“The affected areas include Pretoria North, Wolmer, Dorandia and some parts of Ward 98.
“The power was restored around 08:00 and 90% of the residents have power back in their homes,” said Meyer.
He said the police must hunt down these suspects and arrest them.
“No one was injured but one has to raise a question of what is the job of the security?”
Meyer claimed the security guards were present at the time of the incident.
“We need to speak to the security company and have them put more measures [in place] to ensure that such a thing doesn’t happen again,” said Meyer.
He said more cameras should be installed so that the criminals can be caught from all angles.
“I am deeply concerned about this unfortunate event and I can tell you that it is not the first time in the last six months that this happened,” Meyer said.
Meyer mentioned that an intensified police presence is needed around the substation.
Meanwhile, a power trip at Bellom substation affected Capital Park, Mayville and Annlin.
Ward 98 councillor Sipho Mtakati said the primary section team is busy on-site repairing faulty terminations on panel A2 at the Wolmer substation.
“For now, Heatherdale, Clarina and Winternest will remain off,” said Mtakati.
Tshwane police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said no criminal case was opened concerning this incident.
“Perpetrators will be charged with tampering with essential infrastructure and receive jail time,” he warned.
