Be careful this long weekend, Pretoria residents told
A private security company offers some tips on how not to fall victim to any crime during this time.
With the long weekend upon us, private security company Fidelity ADT offered residents some tips on how not to fall victim to any crime during this time.
“If the resident’s perimeter is not secure, criminals will take advantage and attempt to steal anything visible,” said Fidelity ADT spokesperson Charnel Hattingh.
Here are the tips:
– Residents should ensure that all duplicate keys are locked away when they are not at home and they should not make unnecessary copies.
– Keep the garage and toolshed locked when not in use so that intruders do not have access to any item that can be used as a weapon or burglary tool.
– Reduce all heavy foliage near your perimeter wall and gate to reduce the number of possible hiding spots.
– Always be aware of your surroundings: this applies to any public parking area.
– Do not leave valuables in an unattended vehicle.
– Never push the remote locking device whilst walking away from the vehicle.
– Check that the vehicle is locked by testing the door.
– Ensure the boot is locked.
– Avoid shopping late at night.
Warrant-Officer Isaac Mculu added that residents shouldn’t be heroes when they are cornered by suspects and rather surrender.
Residents were also urged to report any suspicious vehicles or persons to the police.
