Coffee drive lifts spirits of students at TUT Soshanguve campuses

Molamu Khumo of SCO says they came up with this initiative “to keep students warm, to educate them about the programmes we have like prayer sessions, and to show that we care for them”.

Students feeling the cold can now get a hot drink on their way to class.

This was after the Student Representative Council (SRC) from the Student Christian Organisation (SCO) started a coffee drive at the TUT Soshanguve north and south campuses.

The students can get a cup of coffee or tea and muffins.

Molamu Khumo of SCO said they came up with this initiative “to keep them warm, to educate them about the programmes we have like prayer sessions, and to show that we care for them”.

The SCO is also planning on having other programmes that will help students to relieve their academic stress.

“We are planning on having a movie night programme where students will be free to worship and enjoy as we are preaching unity, to support and encourage one another academically.”

Khumo said all other programmes will be implemented after the students are done writing exams.

A Soshanguve North student, Jennet Banda said that this coffee drive is indeed what students needed with load-shedding going on.

“We are unable to have coffee or to eat a proper breakfast in our residences in the morning.

“The SCO is really helping us and impacting lots of students positively,” she said.

Hlakaniphile Vilakazi, who is also a student at the Soshanguve North campus said this is a great initiative as there are students who cannot afford to buy coffee or tea.

“We now have something to look forward to at campus in the morning.

“We are happy with this coffee drive happening on our campuses because we don’t have to worry about leaving our residences without something warm to drink or eat, we know there’s tea, coffee and also muffins at the campus,” she said.

The SCO said the coffee drive will run until next month at the end of the semester.
