SANBS with severe low blood stocks
Every unit of blood can save a minimum of three lives as blood is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets.
The South African Blood Services (SANBS) said they are currently facing severe blood stock shortages on Thursday, due to current weather conditions.
SANBS Senior Manager, Thandi Mosupye said the higher demand for blood has sent blood stocks drop.
“SANBS needs to collect 3 500 units of blood a day and we are appealing to all potential and existing blood donors that are due to donate, to visit a SANBS blood donation site,” said Mosupye.
She said with every little blood available on hand will have a severe impact on patients who rely on life-saving blood transfusions.
Mosupye highlighted that whenever their blood stocks reach below three days, patients’ lives are at risk. Haemorrhaging mothers, newborn babies and accident victims all require a transfusion.
Residents who would like to donate can go to their nearest donation centres in and around Pretoria:
– Hatfield Multi-Disciplinary donor centre, 1122 Burnett St, Hatfield Plaza.
09:00 to 17:00 Mon to Friday, and 08:00 to 14:00 Saturdays.
– Pretoria Central: Sammy Marks donor centre in 138 Church Street, Sammy Marks Square, first floor above Woolworths from only Monday to Friday 09:00 to 17:00.
– From Monday to Sunday, residents can visit the Kolonnade Multi-Disciplinary donor centre on the corner of Zambesi Drive and Dr Van Der Merwe Road, Montana Park. On the first floor where the Musica store in Kolonnade shopping centre used to be.
– Atterbury Value Mart Multi-Disciplinary donor centre in 2001 Atterbury Road. Next to Spec Savers on level 1. Open Monday to Sunday.
– The Grove Mall in Simon Vermooten Road, Equestria, Monday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00.
– Pretoria West: Quagga donor centre in 333 Court Street, Quagga shopping centre open from Monday to Saturday.
Donors must be:
– between 16 and 75 years
– weigh 50kg or more
– be in good health
– lead a healthy lifestyle
– consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient
– commit to donating blood regularly
