N1 closed in bi-direction as petrol tanker burns
“There are reports of a body in the cabin that has burnt beyond recognition.”
The Tshwane metro police have advised motorists to find alternative routes as a petrol taker has caught fire on the N1.
The incident has affected the N1 North and Southbound between Botha Avenue and the R21 flying saucer intersections.
Tshwane metro police spokesperson Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the petrol tanker was engulfed in flames.
Mahamba said “The N1 in both directions is closed off to traffic due to a petrol tanker on fire.
“TMPD are on site to re-direct traffic.”
He said the metro police were unsure how long traffic would be re-directed due to the accident.
“We are not sure how long this might take. We advise motorists to use alternative routes.”
Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said the tanker was on fire on the N1 direction north.
“Upon arrival, the petrol tanker was on fire and laying on its side. The scene has been secured.”
He said no damages to nearby infrastructure were reported.
