Solomon Mahlangu would have turned 67 on July 10 this year.

Mahlangu told the youth to find the cause they loved rather than despair and giving in to drugs.

“Once you associate that passion with how Solomon executed his, then you are likely to achieve what you want in life,” Mahlangu said.

He said the authority wanted to use Solomon Mahlangu’s birthday celebration this year to encourage learners to take education as seriously as he did liberation.

The birthday celebration started with a wreath laying at Solomon Mahlangu’s grave in Mamelodi West cemetery and was followed by a career exhibition at the square.

ANC Mamelodi chairperson Phillip Shabalala said this year’s celebration was one of a kind and young people should take courage and inspiration from the likes of Solomon Mahlangu.

Shabalala said Solomon Mahlangu was a young man who stood the test of time. As a young person, during the brutal state of apartheid, he stood his ground and refused to appeal because he was committed to a course of liberating South Africans.

Kgaogelo Lesoka of the SACP said the party came to celebrate Solomon Mahlangu’s birthday and encourage the youth to get a better education.

She said Solomon Mahlangu was a man who loved education and sport.

“Therefore we are not just celebrating the birthday of Solomon Mahlangu, but we want to encourage the youth to take sport and education seriously to fight high unemployment.”

The event was attended by traditional healers from across three provinces led by the authority, ambassadors from Tanzania and Namibia, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the national youth development agency (NYDA), the SACP and the ANC.

Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu was born on July 10, 1956. He was a South African freedom fighter, struggle activist and operative of the ANC militant wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). He was convicted of murder and hanged in 1979.
