Tshwane waste collection back to normal

“I really need to say this, it hasn’t been easy thus far but I really appreciate your patience and support in making sure our region is collected.”

Tshwane Metro announced on Monday (August 28) that it expected waste collection to return to normal schedule.

However, it said it would first focus on areas where waste had not been collected for two to five weeks.

“We will be focusing on that order. We are also intending to start with normal collection from Monday,” said spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

“The challenges on the ground are still there, here and there, but the service providers are willing to work regardless.”

Ward 59 councillor Shaun Wilkinson told Rekord the past weeks have been frustrating as the metro has been plagued by backlogs of waste collection and other service delivery problems.

He said it now was easy, as there has been progress in making sure waste was collected, even though at a snail’s pace.

“I really need to say this, it hasn’t been easy thus far but I really appreciate your patience and support in making sure our region is collected.”

He urged residents to put out their bins on the normal collection day, as things seem to be back to normality.

The issue of uncollected waste has been a headache in the city for the past six weeks, with many refuse sites also being shut down.

Councillor Siobhan Muller said the Menlo Park Garden Refuse Site would be operational as of Monday.

The dump is open again for garden refuse. Residents with garden waste of less than one ton are not required to have a permit to enter public refuse sites.

“Only businesses such as garden services must present a permit,” said Muller.

Earlier this year, the Rooihuiskraal and Menlo garden sites were shut down to address the backlog at both sites.

Last week, the metro urged residents to desist from dumping illegally in Rooihuiskraal Road.

People had started dumping illegally after waste hadn’t been collected and the site had closed during the ongoing Samwu workers’ strike.
