Placing begins for new academic year learners
If offers are not accepted within seven days, learners would be auto-placed at schools with a placement offer closest to the parent’s or guardian’s home address.
The Gauteng education department urged parents to accept the online placement offers for next year’s Grade 1 and 8 learners as soon as possible.
Gauteng education has placed 99 854 grades 1 and 8 learners at schools for 2024 already.
Spokesperson Steve Mabona said: “A total of 228 027 parents received placement messages, where 99 854 accepted placement offers.”
Mabona said on September 4, the first day of placement, 126 511 placement offers were made and 1 662 learners were provisionally admitted but put on hold while the parents awaited further offers.
“A substantial total of parents have not yet responded to placement offers.”
He said 53 915 placement offers were made to grade 1s and 72 596 to grade 8s.
Placement offers will be made throughout the remainder of the year.
On August 27, the department identified schools north of Pretoria that had received an overwhelming number of learner applications exceeding their capacity.
Presenting the 2024 online admissions at Die Hoërskool Menlopark in Pretoria east, education MEC Matome Chiloane said 292 primary and 277 secondary schools were high-pressure schools in the north.
He said the department had set up interventions to address admission and placement challenges at these schools ahead of the 2024 academic year.
Chiloane said his department planned to build new schools, and mobile classrooms, convert unused facilities into schools or give funds to schools that have demonstrated sound governance and financial capability to build their own additional classrooms.
He said new schools Semphato (in the north of Pretoria), Refitlhilepele and LG Holele/Kgatoentle (west of Pretoria), and Ribane Laka (south) would be completed at the beginning of the 2024 academic year.
Chiloane said applicants who could not be admitted to the school of their choice due to capacity challenges would be offered a transfer to the next closest school available.
“Transfer offers are made only after confirmation that none of the schools to which a parent applied has available space. Parents and guardians who are offered a place at schools they have not applied to have the option to accept or decline.”
