Police in Tshwane arrest 964 suspects for various crimes during seven district operations

Throughout the week, a total of 2 704 individuals and 1 257 vehicles were searched at roadblocks, resulting in the recovery of one stolen vehicle and the issuing of 227 Aarto fines totalling R82 650 with seven vehicles discontinued for not being roadworthy.

Police have arrested 964 suspects for various crimes during seven distinct and highly effective operations in Tshwane in the past week.

They also recovered two unlicensed firearms.

Mamelodi West policing precinct – September 3

Police spokesperson Warrant-Officer Johann Van Dyk said law enforcement personnel arrested 13 undocumented immigrants in the precinct.

He said seven identified drug houses were searched and one person was arrested for dealing in drugs.

“Police found 20 ziplock bags containing meth in his possession.”

Van Dyk said the operation entailed the inspection of 17 liquor premises, with five fined R1 500 each for noncompliance with the liquor act.

More than 200 persons and 33 vehicles were searched.

Wonderboompoort precinct – September 4

Van Dyk said 13 undocumented immigrants and three of their employers were arrested under the immigration act.

He said three people were arrested for drinking in public and one for possession of dagga.

Akasia policing precinct – September 6

“Eight inspections were carried out at second-hand goods dealers, resulting in five being fined R14 500 for non-compliance with the Secondhand Goods Act (Act 6 of 2009).”

Operation Shanela was executed in the early hours of Thursday, September 7.

“Collaborative efforts resulted in the apprehension of 43 undocumented immigrants and the arrest of four individuals for drug dealing.”

He said the police seized 89 ziplock plastic bags of various narcotics.

“One person was arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes, and cigarettes worth approximately R40 000 in his possession were confiscated.

Van Dyk said a roadblock resulted in the issuance of 43 Aarto infringement notices, totalling R20 750 with seven vehicles being impounded for not being roadworthy.

“This operation also involved searching 1 521 individuals and 832 vehicles.”

Ten liquor outlets were inspected and subsequently, four were closed and 87 500ml of liquor was confiscated.

“During the inspection of one of these liquor outlets, a Mandrax manufacturing machine with a scale was found and confiscated.

“The owner was arrested and charged for possession of a suspected drug manufacturing machine.”

Concurrently, detectives from various police stations in the city apprehended a minimum of 286 suspects wanted for various crimes, including 107 arrests related to gender-based violence.

Soshanguve policing precinct – September 8

Soshanguve police hosted a crime prevention operation.

“Six illegal immigrants were detained under the immigration act,” Van Dyk said.

Five people were arrested for dealing and being in possession of drugs.

“One person was arrested for possession of drugs and three for dealing in drugs.”

He added that another suspect was detained for possession of illicit cigarettes.

Van Dyk said police recovered a vehicle reported stolen in Kwaggafontein at the beginning of the month.

Six businesses were inspected and issued with notices for contraventions of municipal health codes.

More than 50 people and 29 vehicles were searched during this operation.

Mamelodi – East policing precinct Friday morning

A liquor and secondhand goods operation was conducted and four liquor premises were inspected, with all closed and 292 330ml of liquor confiscated for contravention of the liquor act.

Four second-hand goods premises were inspected and fined R2 500 each for noncompliance with the Secondhand Goods Act.

Van Dyk said the operation ended on Saturday, September 9.

The operation led to the arrest of 284 people for various crimes, including 13 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 29 for undocumented immigrants and eight for public drinking.

Van Dyk said one person was arrested in possession of 70 ziplock bags of crystal meth and 434g of dagga.

Furthermore, nine liquor outlets were shut down, and 431 430ml of liquor, three chest freezers, two amplifiers, one speaker and a TV were seized.

This operation involved searching 923 individuals and 354 vehicles, leading to the issuance of 184 Aarto traffic infringement notices amounting to R61 900.

Sunnyside police precinct Friday, September 8

Police on patrol received information about a person in possession of a possible illegal firearm.

“The person was stopped and searched and a firearm was found in his possession. It was found that the firearm was stolen in Soweto,” Van Dyk said.

He said the suspect was arrested.

All seized firearms will undergo ballistic analysis to determine potential involvement in other criminal activities.

Throughout the week, 2 704 people and 1 257 vehicles were searched resulting in the recovery of one stolen vehicle and the issuing of 227 Aarto fines totalling R82 650 and seven vehicles impounded for being unroadworthy.

Additionally, 104 undocumented immigrants were arrested.

Law enforcement inspected 41 liquor outlets and shut down 23 for noncompliance with the liquor act.

In total, 811 260ml of liquor was confiscated and will be disposed of.

Eight secondhand premises were inspected and five were fined for noncompliance with the Secondhand Goods Act.

Three businesses were inspected and all were fined for noncompliance with labour regulations.

Two illegal firearms were also removed from the streets.
