High risk of fire this week with red alert

The Sinoville Fire Fighting Association (SFFA) is asking the public to be careful with any activity that could potentially throw a spark and lead to a fire.

The Sinoville Fire Fighting Association (SFFA) issued a red fire danger rating (FDR) alert warning locals of the risk of fire and wildfires for the week.

The alert has been issued due to weather conditions and other factors that contribute to fire spreading.

“A red FDR means that a fire could start easily and spread quickly. Looking at the strong winds for this week this can exacerbate the situation,” said the SFFA spokesperson Zenobia Loock-Du Plessis.

Loock-Du Plessis said the hot temperatures, low humidity, gusty winds and exceptionally dry vegetation can result in catastrophic fires.

“It means that these combined conditions are favourable for fast-moving and uncontrollable fires and any fire that starts will likely spread quickly.”

She said this FDR is a high risk as it can cause excessive damage and even loss of life of animals.

The SFFA is asking the public to be careful with any activity that could potentially throw a spark and lead to a fire.

“If you’ve had a fire of any sort in the last couple of days, please be sure to check to ensure they are properly extinguished,” Loock-Du Plessis said.

She said campfires, ashes from fireplaces, outdoor grills, smoking, chainsaws, using angle grinders, off-road vehicles or other small engines have the potential to throw a spark, ignite a fire and spread quickly.

She warned people against burning their waste or starting a fire. Burn permits for debris are suspended with immediate effect.

“Please use extreme caution until the fire weather and dry conditions improve.”

SFFA offered the following fire safety tips:

– Refrain from using equipment such as chainsaws, angle grinders, off-road vehicles, lawnmowers, etc. during this red alert to avoid sparks and a potential fire.

– Avoid throwing matches or cigarettes from moving cars, and properly extinguish any open fire or live coals with water.

– Clear dry fuels around your home and make them less susceptible to fire to prevent any blaze from beginning.

– Report unattended fires immediately.

– Be cautious when using flammable liquids.

– Report fires early, by dialling 071 409 9251.

She said the SFFA will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
