Kalafong Hospital suffers water shortages
The maternity ward and other various sections among the areas are affected by low water supply.
Kalafong Hospital has reported that various sections of the facility have been impacted by the recent water crisis in the Tshwane metro.
MMC for utility services and regional operations Themba Fosi announced earlier this week that various reservoirs had been running low affecting numerous areas.
Reservoirs in Laudium and Atteridgeville were on the list due to inadequate supply from Rand Water.
The Atteridgeville-based clinic said that the water supply problem was identified on Saturday, September 9.
“The maternity section was affected as it receives a supply of water directly from the internal reservoir, which had run low. However, other areas of the hospital received water from internal tanks, therefore were not affected,” said Kalafong Hospital acting CEO Dr Lebo Mpshe.
Mpshe said the metro was able to dispatch water tankers to supplement and replenish the reservoir. By Monday morning, (September 11) supply was restored to normal in all areas of the hospital though disruptions continue to affect the facility.
“Unfortunately, the hospital is not fully insulated against service supply interruptions which affect surrounding communities. Rand Water recently announced water restrictions due to various challenges. This affects supply to the facility as well,” Mpshe continued.
Fosi said the metro was in talks with the deputy minister of water and sanitation to provide feedback on the past week and the challenges that the metro faces regarding supplying water.
Mpshe assured patients that the hospital is doing its utmost to limit the disruptions that the water restrictions have had on the facility.
“We work closely with the municipality, which always assists us with water tankers whenever we experience supply challenges,” he said.
