Clean-up campaign around Mams police station, local school

“We cannot sit back and fold our arms while residents are busy littering next to the police station and the school.”

A growing garbage problem all over Mamelodi prompted the Mamelodi West CPF to embark on a clean-up campaign on Friday morning.

The clean-up focused on the Mamelodi police station, Tshimollo primary school and Mamelodi magistrate’s court.

This follows the ongoing municipal strike which has led people to illegally dump waste anywhere in Mamelodi.

“We cannot sit back and fold our arms while residents are busy littering near the police station and the school. The learners and police officers are at high risk of getting diseases from this unhealthy environment,” said Zoey Masuku Mabaso of Mamelodi West CPF.

She said residents dumping near the station no longer have respect for the police station or worry about the health of learners.

“The areas next to the station and school are disgusting with waste and we could no longer fold our arms and watch as people dump waste day and night without fear.

“We have called on the residents near the school and police station, the police and wardens to take part in the clean-up,” she added.

Mabaso said they were, however, grateful that the Tshwane metro has come on board by supplying them with plastic bags with the help of the councillor Shiba Madonsela.

The Mamelodi police together with the wardens escorted waste trucks to dumpsites.

“Our main aim is to keep our wards. our facilities, schools and court clean and we desperately need support from the community to help prevent the illegal dumpsites.”

She said illegal dumping is a huge problem and creates an unhealthy environment for neighbouring residents.

The residents were urged to take pride in their community and help clean up the neighbourhood.

“We want to live in a healthy environment but the municipal strike does not allow people to dump waste just anywhere in Mamelodi,” she said.

She advised the community that illegal dumping is against the law and that offenders will be penalised.
