Two arrested with stolen property worth R1m

Residents are urged to refrain from buying stolen items as “a buyer of stolen goods is as guilty as the thief”.

Stolen goods worth an estimated R1-million were seized during a police operation at the Montana flea market on September 24.

The joint raid by police, Sinoville CPF as well as private security companies, HiWay Patrol, BSG and MDOC CI CIT arrested two men (aged 35 and 38) and a large quantity of items were seized.

Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said the suspects were in possession of stolen goods which included lithium batteries, UPS inverters and other solar equipment.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Sarah Lesabane warned that a buyer of stolen goods was as guilty as the thief.

She added that according to law both are as guilty and harsh sentences will apply to both.

Lesabane said that often criminals sold stolen goods to someone and later returned to steal the same.

She urged all secondhand goods dealers to report any suspicious transaction to the police.

She said an unscrupulous dealer found guilty of possession of stolen property could face a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

To report any suspected criminal activity, call the police on 08600 10111.
