Tshwane operations lead to 942 arrests

Throughout the week, a total of 3 042 individuals and 1 182 vehicles underwent thorough searches at roadblocks, resulting in the issuance of 22 Aarto fines totaling R75 300.

Tshwane police have arrested 942 people in six highly effective operations that began in Silverton on Sunday, September 24.

Spokesperson Warrant-officer Johan van Dyk said the almost 1 000 people were arrested for possession of drugs, gender-based violence, public drinking, drunken driving, contravention of immigration laws, among others.

He said police arrested six undocumented immigrants and four people for drinking in public.

“Two individuals were taken into custody for the possession of illicit cigarettes and police searched 215 individuals and 20 vehicles during this operation,” Van Dyk said.

The operations continued in Mamelodi on Wednesday, September 27.

Liquor and second-hand goods outlets were inspected so the Liquor and Secondhand Goods Acts could be enforced.

“Three inspections were carried out at second-hand goods dealers, resulting in fines issued to two businesses totalling R4 000 for non-compliance with the Secondhand Goods Act (Act 6 of 2009).”

Van Dyk said seven liquor outlets were visited, leading to the closure of four, as well as the confiscation of 53 120ml of liquor and issuing of R3 000 in fines.

Operation Shanela was executed in the early hours of Thursday, September 20 in Mamelodi West.

“Collaborative efforts involving multiple stakeholders resulted in the apprehension of 39 undocumented immigrants, with one person being arrested for employing undocumented immigrants.”

Van Dyk said five people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and two for drug possession, and 29 bags of narcotics were seized.

He said one person was arrested for defeating the ends of justice, one for the pointing of a firearm and another for robbery.

“A roadblock during the operation resulted in the issuance of 202 Aarto infringement notices, totalling R75 300,” he said.

This operation also involved searches of 1 260 people and 557 vehicles.

Seven liquor outlets were inspected and subsequently closed, leading to the confiscation of 102 510 ml of liquor.

Concurrently, detectives from police stations across the city apprehended 303 wanted suspects for various crimes, including 76 for gender-based violence.

Mamelodi East SAPS conducted an operation, which led to the arrest of three undocumented immigrants.

Van Dyk said six liquor outlets were inspected, five shut down and 16 480ml of liquor were confiscated.

“Three second-hand goods shops were inspected and all were fined for failing to comply with the Second-hand Goods Act,” he said, adding that 453 people and 146 vehicles were searched during this operation.

Another operation, Shanela, took place on the afternoon of Saturday, September 30 in Atteridgeville.

Van Dyk said this led to the arrest of 282 people, including16 for driving under the influence of alcohol, another 18 being undocumented immigrants, eight for public drinking and two for possession of illicit cigarettes valued at R3 500.

Furthermore, 25 liquor outlets were inspected for compliance, resulting in seven being closed down and 16 750ml of liquor and sound equipment being confiscated.

“This operation involved searching 1 103 people and 455 vehicles, which led to the recovery of a grey VW Polo reported stolen in Olievenhoutbosch.”

Throughout the week, a total of 3 042 people and 1 182 vehicles were searched at roadblocks, resulting in the issuance of 22 Aarto fines totalling R75 300.

Additionally, 66 undocumented immigrants were arrested, with another person being caught for employing undocumented immigrants.

Law enforcement inspected 38 liquor outlets, resulting in 19 closures over non-compliance with the liquor act. In total, 188 860ml of liquor were confiscated and will be disposed of.

Eight second-hand shops were inspected, and six fined for non-compliance with the Second-hand Goods Act. Police visited 24 business and searched12 premises.
