429 arrested during Operation Shanela
Police and other law enforcement groups conducted searches on 2 142 individuals and 448 vehicles.
In the latest Operation Shanela, Tshwane police and other law enforcement groups arrested 429 suspects across Gauteng including Garsfontein.
The multidisciplinary operations entailed high-visibility patrols in crime hotspots, compliance inspections, and raids on illicit liquor outlets.

“Throughout the operation, Tshwane detective teams successfully apprehended 303 suspects. Among them were 83 individuals involved in gender-based violence, three charged with murder, four with attempted murder, seven involved in armed robbery, and 10 apprehended for rape,” said police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk.
The operation was supported by two compliance teams and a roadblock group.
Seven liquor outlets were inspected and three were closed for contravening the Liquor Act. Thousands of litres of liquor were confiscated.
“All liquor seized will be disposed of once the criminal cases have been concluded,” Van Dyk added.
One person was arrested for being in possession of illicit cigarettes. Police seized 220 loose cigarettes from the suspect which will be destroyed upon finalisation of the criminal case.
“One person was found in possession of 17kg of copper but could not give a proper explanation or reason why. He was subsequently charged with possession of suspected stolen goods,” Van Dyk added.

Police also seized a pellet gun and two knives in the operation.
About 124 undocumented immigrants were detained and are awaiting deportation proceedings once their legal matters are finalised.
Twelve premises, 2 142 individuals and 448 vehicles were searched.
Almost 50 vehicles were checked to see if they were not stolen and 142 Aarto infringement notices were issued to the value of R66 000 with one vehicle found to be unroadworthy.
The home affairs, labour and traffic departments together with TMPD, Tracker, crime preven
tion wardens, local CPFs, ward councillors as well as SAPS members from various precincts formed part of operation Shanela.
The labour department inspected five business premises and subsequently issued five contravention notices.
All the arrested individuals are expected to appear in court in due course.
