Storm expected in Gauteng, warns SAWS

Thunderstorms are expected to develop over the North West province and move eastwards, reaching Gauteng by late afternoon

The South African Weather Service issued a warning for Gauteng to expect heavy rains and strong winds on October 15.

Tshwane, Johannesburg, Ekuruhuleni are expected to feel a weather shift this afternoon as the weather service warns that heavy rains, strong winds, possible flooding, hail and lightning will affect Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

The service warned, “A line of thunderstorms is expected to develop over the North West province and move eastwards, reaching Gauteng by late afternoon, and Mpumalanga and south-western Limpopo in the evening.”

“Strong winds are possible and rainfall amounts of 20-45mm are likely, which may lead to localised flooding.”

It warned that the strong winds and rain would likely cause damage to buildings in or near low-lying areas, and informal settlements and roads are susceptible to flooding, and added that residents should stay cautious.

Drivers are warned to be wary as motor vehicle accidents are likely due to poor driving visibility.
