Saulsville man gets 15 years in jail for robbery

A direct imprisonment sentence was handed to the Saulsville robbery accused by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court after the state prosecutor had argued that the incident affected the victim psychologically

The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court sentenced a Saulsville resident to 15 years in prison on Wednesday.

Stanley Mnguni (32) had earlier been found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping, for which he would serve a three-year jail term.

According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanje, on the evening of September 24, 2018, Mnguni and his crew ambushed two victims in Westpark.

“Mnguni and his accomplices pointed firearms at the two complainants, forced the father into the back of his vehicle, then drove off but dropped him off 2km from the daughter’s home.”

She said the kidnappers made him pay to remove his property from the vehicle.

“The complainant called the police, who managed to apprehend the one kidnapper who later turned state witness after leading police to Mnguni and his other accomplice.

“Mnguni was arrested but his accomplice had already been shot dead during an unrelated robbery.”

Mnguni pleaded not guilty to the offences, claiming mistaken identity.

However, state prosecutor Advocate Emile van der Merwe told the court Mnguni was linked to the offence by the complainants who identified him in a parade.

Van der Merwe told the court men like Mnguni were the reason why the majority of South Africans feared for their life on the roads.

She argued that the incident affected the victim psychologically and he could not drive for two months.

Van der Merwe said the accused failed to present compelling reasons why the court should deviate from the minimum sentence and she asked it to impose the prescribed minimum.

Magistrate Ntlati echoed the prosecutor’s sentiments, saying Mnguni had committed a serious crime, hence the sentence was appropriate.
