Grade 6 Ga-Rankuwa boy dies in transport incident
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident after the learner fell from the school bus after school.
A grade 6 boy from Modiselle Primary in Ga-Rankuwa has tragically lost his life after falling from a school bus on Thursday afternoon, February 1.
“The tragic incident occurred as learners were being transported home after school,” the Gauteng Department of Education said in a statement.
“It is alleged that the learner fell from the bus and the rear wheels went over him.”
The department said that its psycho-social support team had visited the scene of the incident and the learner’s family.
It said that police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Indeed, this is terribly saddening news,” said Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane.
“Scholar transport is an initiative that forms part of our critical interventions to alleviate pressure from parents. As such, we expect our learners to be safely transported from home to school and back home.”
He called on drivers to be extra vigilant of learner safety.
“We wish to convey our deepest condolences to the family and the school community,” he said.
