Weather service predicts hot week ahead

The South African Weather Service has issued an advisory for heatwave conditions extending into the weekend.

Tshwane will experience another hot week with temperatures reaching 34°C on Wednesday, despite a slight chance of rain.

On Wednesday morning, the SA weather service (Saws) issued a heatwave warning for at least up to Saturday, February 17.

Saws predicts temperatures to reach 33°C on Thursday, dipping to a low of 18°C with partly cloudy conditions.

Friday will once again see temperatures rise to 34°C and a low of 21°C with clear conditions.

Saturday and Sunday will remain hot at 33°C and 32°C respectively, before followed by slight relief to 31°C on Monday.

Early forecasts show temperatures will remain high into next week.

Tshwane emergency service (EMS) spokesperson, Deputy Chief Charles Mabaso, called on residents to beware of the adverse effects of a heatwave and to take the necessary precautions.

“The effects may include dehydration, heat exhaustion and, in severe circumstances, heat stroke.

Residents are also advised to remain cautious of the increased risk of veld fires during this period,” he said.

Mabaso advised the following precautionary measures:

– Stay hydrated by drinking copious amounts of water

– Limit outdoor activities (especially during the hottest time of the day)

– Wear loose clothing but avoid dark clothing where possible

– Remain in the shade where possible

– Keep an eye on vulnerable individuals

– Ensure children and animals are not left in a parked vehicle

– Avoid strenuous physical activity if possible. If you must do strenuous activity, do it during the coolest part of the day, which is usually in the morning between 04:00 and 07:00.

He further called on residents to be vigilant and immediately report any fire or need for rescue on 107 toll-free or 012 358 6300/6400. For ambulance services, call 112 toll-free.
