Thirsty runners take part in the 11th biannual Beer Mile

For every one mile you run, you drink a beer.

More than 100 beer lovers took the Hazeldean trails this weekend for a run with a bit of a twist as the Hazeldean Brewing Co. hosted its 11th beer mile.

The beer mile is an official event sanctioned by the Beer Mile Organization in the USA and for every one mile you run, you drink a beer.
The beers must have a minimum alcohol content of 5% and no less than 350ml. There are four stops in the race, a mile is 1.6km meaning each lap is 400m while throwing up results in a disqualification.

“Traditionally it’s run on an athletics track because that’s nice, that’s 400m going around and you just do four of these laps but because we’re on a farm it’s nice to be in the nature and enjoy the scenery,” said founder, owner and operator of Hazeldean Brewing, Marius Botha.

“You usually get two types of runners, the ones that are taken seriously because you’ve got to finish your beer at that station, you can’t continue running with it and you got to finish all of it otherwise you’re disqualified. Then you get the ones that are just here with their kids or dogs and basically hang around at the stations, have a good time and carry their beer wherever.”
