Gauteng to get new number plates
Gauteng premier promised new number plates in his State of the Province address in 2023, and recently said the change would take effect from April.
Motorists in the province will have to get new number plates from April 1 as the province attempts to combat crime.
Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi confirmed in an interview with eNCA that the change would take effect from April this year.
Lesufi said that the move was important to combat crime as the new plates would be harder to duplicate or tamper with.
“Every crime, especially violent crime in our province, which can be a cash heist, kidnapping or murder, a car is involved.
“Our licensing regime was very bad, so we will launch new number plates in Gauteng from the first of April.”
He first announced the move at the end of 2022 following an SIU report on corruption in the traffic system, as he pointed out that Gauteng’s licensing regime was flawed.
In his 2023 State of the Province address, Lesufi said “the current number plate system is running out of the numeric and letters.
“We want to take advantage of this situation to introduce new, hard-to-copy and tamper number plates.”
He said the province gazetted a call for public comment in February 2023.
“This new system will also assist in managing the abuse of temporary number plates.”
In July 2023, Gauteng roads and transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela launched the registration process for number plate manufacturers for new plates.
