Counterfeit goods worth R8-million seized in Marabastad raid

The authorities arrested 12 undocumented immigrants during the takedown operation.

Police have seized over R8 million worth of goods and arrested 12 undocumented foreign nationals during a takedown operation in Marabastad.

The Marabastad trading stalls are well-known bargain hunting spots for residents, though on February 21, it was a hive of police activity.

The SAPS National Counterfeit Unit led a team of fellow agencies to seize counterfeit goods.

“The operation resulted in the seizure of various counterfeit items such as clothing apparel, shoes, caps and bags,” said Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk.

“Just two weeks ago, the team also seized counterfeit goods to the value of R13-million during a takedown operation in the Johannesburg CBD,” she said.

The unit was assisted by officials from the Department of Home Affairs South African Revenue Services, Brand Protectors and security officers during this operation.

Earlier this month, deputy mayor Nasiphi Moya revealed that the metro has just spent R7-million on 65 new stalls and three storage units to cater to informal traders.

The investment is aimed at offering dedicated trading zones for the informal traders, promoting compliance with municipal by-laws and providing support to the sector.
