VIDEO: Ekurhuleni police bust Mams youth, stepfather in R9m hijack case
A 19-year-old and his stepfather (57) were arrested after stolen items and a hijacked truck were found at their home.
Ekurhuleni metro police (EMPD) have recovered stolen goods worth R9-million at an east of Pretoria settlement.
Spokesperson Constable Marie Mashishi said police pounced on a Mamelodi home and arrested two, including a 19-year-old believed to be complicit in the crime on February 19 following a tip-off.
“On Monday between 12:00 and 21:00, the EMPD, with SAPS Ekurhuleni crime intelligence apprehended two men and [seized] R9-million worth of reported stolen goods.”
WATCH:
Mashishi said the goods were robbed from a hijacked truck, which was also recovered in the process.
She said the sting operation at the residence resulted from a tip-off about a suspicious white Mercedes Benz truck parked on Malaka Street.
She said acting on this intel, law enforcement descended on the property and found a 19-year-old on the premises.
She said the youth was interrogated at the scene.
“The house occupant, who alleged that the truck belongs to his stepfather, allowed officers to search the parked truck and a variety of brand new motor vehicle parts, were found.
The truck was tested and the revelation was, it was reported hijacked in Kempton Park two weeks ago.”
Mashishi said as police were combing the area for more information, the stepfather arrived.
“Not long, the 57-year-old arrived on the premises and was arrested too.”
She said the two were facing charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle and stolen goods.
Mashishi said the two were taken to the Mamelodi West police station.
“The detained pair is expected to appear in the relevant magistrate’s court soon. All the recovered goods, including the reported robbed truck, were confiscated and taken to the police station, for further investigation.”
Mashishi said police were expecting to make more arrests in the case soon.
