State-of-the-art Lethabong school of specialisation officially launched in Soshanguve

Gauteng education department officially launched Lethabong maths, science and ICT school of specialisation with a focus on automatives in Soshanguve.

The school launched on Wednesday, February 28 in the north of Pretoria together with Soshanguve Automative School of specialisation, both of which share a partnership with BMW, whose Rosslyn plant is in the vicinity.

This is the 34th school of specialisation, which marks a significant milestone in the journey of Gauteng education towards providing diverse and tailored educational opportunities for all learners.

Education MEC Matome Chiloane said the launch of the Lethabong School is also a testament to the ever-expanding landscape of specialised education in Gauteng.

“Schools of specialisation aim to exceed the standard offerings of public ordinary schools, striving to be community beacons that cultivate highly skilled learners prepared for work, further education or entrepreneurship,” Chiloane said.

He said the goal of the education department is to equip students for future careers, even those that are currently nonexistent, through these schools.

Each school of specialisation bears a focus specific to the economic corridor in which it is located.

The focus of Lethabong is on the Tshwane economic development corridor which has automotive and research innovation.

Lethabong stands out as a leading example among secondary schools in the region, said Chiloane.

“Its 94.3% matric pass rate in 2023 not only reflects the effectiveness of the school’s teaching methodologies, management and support systems but also the hard work and dedication of learners.”

He said this diligence was demonstrated in the various learner inventions such as a water purification system that produces clean water the learners then sell.

The learners also have a maths centre with a wide array of digital mathematical equations available online and projected to smartboards.

The school features a tab lab, a laboratory where learners use smart tablets for learning.

Lastly, learners displayed a smart transportation system that utilises solar power to drive autonomous vehicles on a computer-coded course.

“Together, with unwavering determination and a shared vision for excellence, Lethabong paves the way for a brighter future, where every learner has the opportunity to thrive and succeed,” said Chiloane.
