West business suffers two-day fire

The fire that blazed over two days through a scrapyard in Vom Hagen Street in the west of Pretoria has been extinguished.

According to the Tshwane emergency services, the fire started on Tuesday, March 5 and was put out the next day.

Emergency spokesperson, assistant chief Valentine Matlala said the 4 Aces scrapyard, located at 114 Vom Hagen Street, caught fire in the early evening and the blaze continued until the early hours of the next day.

According to Matlala, it started on Tuesday and was put out, however, it ignited again on Wednesday, forcing firefighters back to the scene.

Matlala said emergency staff received the first call of a fire outbreak around 18:00.

He said on the second day of the fire, disaster management members had pitched at the fire scene to do an assessment when they sprung back into action to put out the blaze.

Three units responded to the scene, 12 minutes after receiving the call.

Matlala said the fire was extinguished at 02:30.

“The crews are still at the incident extinguishing hotspots,” he said.

No casualties were reported at the incident.

Witness Mokodi Mboneng, who was driving past the scrapyard on Tuesday, saw the fire at 22:00. According to him, there were multiple water tanks on the scene.

Metro police spokesperson Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said: “The roads were only closed since this morning and will remain closed until the fire is contained.”

Mahamba said the Tshwane metro closed Von Hagen Street on Wednesday morning.

“The road closure was between President Burger Street and Es’kia Mphahlele Drive.”
