East communities’ water woes end after dry spell
The pump had been broken since February 20. A new pump and motor was installed on Friday.
Following several weeks of dry taps, Tshwane metro has confirmed that water has been restored to all areas in the far east of Pretoria.
For weeks residents of Ekangala, Rethabiseng, parts of Bronkhorstspruit and surroundings have been without water due to a broken pump at the Bronkhorstspruit water treatment plant, Tshwane said.
Metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba said the pump had been broken since February 20, which forced the plant to pump at half-capacity, leading to low pressure and no water in some parts of the far east.
“A new pump and motor were successfully installed at the plant on Friday during the day, and pumping started in earnest at around 16:00.”
Bokaba said the metro kept to its commitment. It would take a few days for the system to recover and stabilise before full water supply is restored to all the areas in Region 7.

“Full supply has been restored in Ekangala and Rethabiseng, except in Rethabiseng Ext 4, due to the infrastructure network connection.”
Rethabiseng Ext 4 section will start receiving water once there is enough water pressure in the whole area.
The high-lying areas are also receiving water.
“There are indications that water has been gradually trickling in at Ekandustria since this morning.”
He said the city apologised for the inconvenience caused.
