Locals raise funds for community safety

The annual initiative is in its second year and raises funds for the community to fight crime and bring the community together.

Lyttleton CPF and the Welriet Community Forum hosted a community fun run/walk this weekend at the Garstkloof Nature Reserve.

The annual initiative is in its second year and raises funds for the community to fight crime and bring the community together.

Residents enjoyed either a 2km/5km run/walk, music, various market stalls as well as K9 and SAPS safety demonstrations.

“The reserve hasn’t been really active in the past few years so we decided that as part of crime prevention, we have to get people outside of their houses and interacting with nature and each other,” said Welriet director, Bonolo Mosoane.

Mosoane said that the funds collected help the role players carry out their initiatives through services, including pothole repairs, clean-ups, and safety reinforcements.

“Crime is the number one issue. We have key hotspots in the area, certain informal settlements and being close to the highway, we have a lot of transitional theft, so cars coming in and out causing high crime, wall jumpers and so on.

“The other issue is maintenance, we all know that the city of Tshwane is struggling to maintain our streets so we go around trying to make our areas as beautiful as possible. We maintain parks, clean up streets and those types of things,” said Mosoane.

Mosoane said that the role players, all volunteers, will bring more fun runs to the community in future.

“Support your community police sub-forums. The only way we can build a safer community is for one, know your neighbour and two, support non-profit agencies.”
