Hitman gets hefty sentence

The accused’s sentences are set to run concurrently.

The Pretoria high court sentenced Sibusiso Mtshali (29) to two life terms for his spate of crimes on April 25.

The Vosloorus hitman was convicted for two counts of premeditated murder, three of attempted murder as well as possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The court sentenced him to two life terms for the murders, 15 years for the attempted murders, six years for possession of a firearm and three years of possession of ammunition.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the sentences would run concurrently.

“In May 2019, a taxi businessman, Convency Lawrences Twala was at his home in Zithobeni, Bronkhorstspruit, with four of his friends when Mtshali and two unknown accomplices arrived and fired several shots at them and then left.

Twala died on the scene, Kagiso Zachariah Rampou in hospital while the two other victims survived their gunshot wounds,” said Mahanjana.

Mahanjana said the accused was arrested in March 2022 at Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court where he appeared on another murder charge and has been in custody since after the NPA successfully opposed his release on bail.

“He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

During the mitigation of the sentence, Mtshali asked the court to consider his age and deviate from imposing the prescribed minimum sentence.

“However prosecutor Advocate Sipho Lalane, argued that Mtshali showed no remorse for his actions, had ample time to change his mind while driving from Johannesburg to Bronkhorstspruit but did not,” he said.

He said Mtshali killed Twala at his home.

“The prosecutor asked the court to impose a sentence of life imprisonment.

Judge Masopa agreed that Mtshali showed no remorse and said courts are the only hope for society as this crime of contract murder is rife in the country therefore, courts must find a way to deal with them,” said Mahanjana.
