Police recover stolen vehicle in The Orchards after attempted hijacking

When the suspects stopped at a garage in The Orchards to refuel, the victim managed to escape.

Police are on the hunt for two suspects who attempted to hijack a vehicle in central Pretoria on May 20.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said the two unknown men approached the victim and requested a ride to Booysens.

He said the victim, who was driving, agreed to transport them for a fee of R60.

“The suspects pointed a firearm at the victim, forced him out of the driver’s seat and into the back seat,” said Van Dyk.

He said one of the suspects took control of the vehicle and drove in a northerly direction on the R80 highway before exiting at the Wonderpark offramp and onto Doreen Avenue.

Van Dyk stated that as the victim’s car ran out of petrol, the suspects drove to an Engen garage in The Orchards to refuel.

He said the victim was instructed to lie down and remain quiet while he was being threatened with a firearm.

“The victim screamed for help, prompting one of the suspects to cock the firearm and pull the trigger.

“The driver instructed the second suspect to shoot the victim, but he hit him on the head with the firearm,” he said.

Van Dyk said the victim managed to escape.

“The suspects followed him [on foot]. Meanwhile, a white BMW passing by fired several shots at the suspects and drove away.

“The victim was then assisted by another person who took him to the Engen garage where he found his vehicle abandoned by the suspects,” said Van Dyk.

A case of attempted hijacking was opened at the Akasia police station. People who have information about the suspects who are still at large are urged to contact police via the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
