North shelter gives dogs warmth this winter
Soshanguve Animal Shelter seeks support in taking care of animals this cold season.
A non-profit organisation dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating abandoned, abused, and neglected animals in Soshanguve, Mabopane, Ga-Rankuwa and Hammanskraal has had to take on more this winter.
Soshanguve Animal Shelter and Educentre founder and managing director, Tebogo Maredi said the number of animals they care for often increases during the winter months.
“Many stray animals are in need of shelter and warmth during the colder weather, and we see a rise in the number of rescues and intakes during this time,” he said.
The shelter focuses on providing these animals with the care they need, including medical treatment, proper nutrition, and a safe environment.
“During winter, our shelter has several specific needs including warm blankets and bedding for the animals, increased food supplies to ensure all animals are well-nourished and donations to help with heating and maintaining a comfortable environment for the animals.”

Maredi said the shelter is currently taking care of 40 dogs and capacity varies based on the available resources and the number of animals in need.
He said the shelter rescues up to 10 animals a day in the townships, and networks with shelters and rescue organisations to which it can take animals when it is full.
The shelter is currently under renovation to increase its capacity to 100, meaning it can take a further 30 to 40 more dogs.
He said community involvement, volunteers and donations are crucial to operations at the shelter and encouraged locals to consider fostering animals, donating supplies, or contributing financially.
“Every little bit helps and goes a long way to ensuring the well-being of the animals in our care.”
